Stay Connected When Your Main Internet Connection Fails

Alborán Connect designs and installs resilient dual-internet systems that combine your existing fibre or fixed internet connection with independent Starlink satellite backup.

If the primary connection fails, a managed gateway can automatically transfer internet traffic to the backup connection. When the primary service recovers, the network automatically returns to it.

Two internet connections. One managed gateway.

Both internet connections feed the same managed gateway. The customer's internal network remains unchanged — the gateway simply manages which internet connection carries the traffic.

Fibre / Fixed Internet

WAN 1 — Primary
WAN 2 — Backup

Managed UniFi Gateway

Property / Business Network

1. Normal Operation

Primary internet carries normal network traffic. Starlink remains available as the secondary connection.

2. Primary Connection Failure

The gateway detects loss of the primary internet connection and automatically transfers internet connectivity to Starlink.

3. Primary Connection Recovery

When the primary connection becomes healthy again, the gateway automatically restores it as the preferred connection.

Your Internet Connection Runs More Than Your Television

Modern properties and businesses increasingly depend on internet connectivity for far more than streaming. A second internet path can provide valuable resilience when the primary provider or terrestrial infrastructure experiences an outage.

Cloud applications
VoIP
Smart-home systems
Guest Wi-Fi
Staff networks
Booking and management systems
Payment systems

Watch Automatic Failover in Action

This video demonstrates how Alborán Connect combines a primary internet connection with independent Starlink backup and managed automatic WAN failover.

See how primary internet and independent Starlink backup work together through a managed failover gateway.

Integrated into your wider managed network.

Alborán Connect can integrate failover into a wider managed network rather than simply adding another router. Potential integrations include:

UniFi gateways
Managed switches
Wi-Fi access points
Outdoor Wi-Fi
Separate owner / staff / guest networks
CCTV networks
Guest houses and outbuildings
Long-range wireless links
Remote monitoring and management

Two different infrastructure paths.

A fibre connection and Starlink use fundamentally different infrastructure. Where appropriate, using terrestrial internet as the primary connection and satellite internet as the backup can reduce dependence on a single access technology.

This does not protect against every possible outage — a power failure at the property, for example, would affect both connections unless backup power is in place. The resilience comes from the independence of the two internet paths: if the terrestrial provider or its local infrastructure experiences a fault, the satellite backup can maintain connectivity.

Build Resilience Into Your Network

Every property and network is different. Alborán Connect can assess:

  • Existing ISP connection
  • Existing router / network architecture
  • Starlink suitability
  • Gateway requirements
  • Wi-Fi / network infrastructure
  • Critical connected equipment
  • Remote management requirements

Internet failover questions, answered.

What is automatic internet failover?
Automatic internet failover combines your existing primary internet connection with an independent backup connection. A managed gateway monitors both connections and automatically transfers internet traffic to the backup if the primary connection becomes unavailable. When the primary connection recovers, the gateway automatically restores it as the preferred connection.
Can I use fibre as my main internet connection and Starlink as backup?
Yes. This is the most common configuration. Your existing fibre or fixed terrestrial internet connection serves as the primary WAN, and an independent Starlink satellite connection serves as the secondary WAN. The managed gateway handles the switching automatically.
Does Starlink need to be running all the time?
Starlink needs to remain powered and connected to the managed gateway so it is ready when required. During normal operation, your primary internet connection carries the traffic while Starlink remains available as the backup WAN. If the primary connection fails, the gateway automatically transfers connectivity to Starlink. The exact configuration may depend on the installation.
What happens when my fibre connection fails?
The managed gateway detects that the primary internet connection is no longer available and automatically transfers internet traffic to the Starlink backup connection. The switch happens automatically — no manual intervention is required.
Does the system automatically switch back when fibre returns?
Yes. When the primary connection becomes healthy again, the gateway automatically restores it as the preferred connection. Traffic returns to the primary WAN without any manual action.
Will my existing Wi-Fi network need to be replaced?
Not necessarily. The failover gateway sits between your internet connections and your existing network. In many cases your existing Wi-Fi access points and switches can remain in place. Alborán Connect assesses your current network during the site visit and recommends only what is actually needed.
Can Alborán Connect remotely manage the system?
Yes. The managed UniFi gateway can be remotely monitored and supported, allowing many issues to be identified without an immediate site visit. This is part of the wider managed network service Alborán Connect provides.
Is internet failover suitable for businesses?
Yes. Businesses that depend on cloud applications, VoIP, payment systems, booking platforms and remote access can benefit from having a backup internet connection. The managed gateway handles the switching automatically, reducing the impact of a primary connection outage.
Can failover protect CCTV and security systems?
Yes. CCTV cameras, access-control systems and remote security access all depend on internet connectivity. A backup connection can help maintain access to these systems if the primary internet connection experiences an outage.
Does failover guarantee zero downtime?
No. Automatic failover does not guarantee zero downtime. When the external internet connection changes, existing sessions such as VPNs, video calls or streams may need to reconnect. The system provides resilience by automatically restoring internet connectivity via the backup connection, but a brief interruption to active sessions is possible during the transition.
